Jaclyn's Quilt Art

Welcome to my page about Quilt Art. Below you will view some of my Quilt
art and find out more about what that term means.  I am a member of the
Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters (APNQ) and the West Sound Quilters
(WSQ) of Kitsap County, WA.  Being associated with other quilters is a fulfilling
and fun experience, and something I have cherished in my heart.

There are some main differences between quilted pieces and quilt art, but the most
telling is the fact that quilt art pieces are pictures of something and not just pieced
blocks.  In fact, you hardly ever find any pieced blocks within a quilt art piece. And
Quilt art pieces, more often than not, will include other types of quilted elements
such as metallic embroidery thread, objects from nature, flowerettes -- basically
things that are 3-D in effect. This is why I love quilt art.  This art form speaks to
my soul and helps to shape my life with life form elements.

In 1996 I got my first taste of quilt art when I went to Wenatchee, WA to view
Karen Schofflen Hagens' quilts. That was the best way for me to awaken my
creative spirit, I found, to meet the QUEEN of quilt art and then begin my journey.
This meeting resulted in my first piece entitled "Holy, Healing Home." Freed
from pattern restrictions, I gave myself permission to experiment beyond what
was known, and to just HAVE FUN!

The following machine stitched quilt (based on a pre-set pattern but not completed
as such) was shown at the Puyallup Fair, 1998. It is seen here hanging on our
dining room wall where it graces our home.

My next project was created for exhibit. Part of the "Invoking Spirits"
traveling show of the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters,
    this 2' x 3' quilt was seen around the world between 1998 - 2000,
and then auctioned in August, 2000 to the highest bidder (who was
my husband, Dick Henderson!) "My Soul's Code" invites the viewer
to share in my uniquely feminine, divine and human inner natures.

The white labels are fortunes from fortune cookies. The figure sings her
life into being.  She possesses the 7 levels of spiritual creative energies,
or Chakras. The piece is hand stitched and was completed in 3 weeks,
during August, 1998.  Notice how the angels stare back at you, and at the
embellishments in the quilt. This is my way of incorporating my soul's
    observation of life events.

Finally, we come to my latest work. Shown at the Puyallup Fair,
October, 2000, this piece was entered in the Fair's Quilt Challenge.
    "Air Fair 2000"
celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Puyallup Fair
with a picturesque scene of the Puyallup Valley (including Mt. Ranier),
a dome sky overhead and a parlay of cows, horses, chickens and horses
soaring by, inside hot air balloon baskets.

The quilt is hand-stitched and is 68" (45" x 23"). The fabric that was given
to me to use in the challenge is seen on the sides of the quilt, and as the
balloon baskets.  This is a fun quilt and is one that is meant to bring a
smile to your face, so enjoy!

Here's a picture of me busily working late into the night to get the quilt done on time!

And here's a close-up of the invisible stitch quilting used on this quilt.
This is the first time that I completed a quilt completely by hand,
and I am proud of it.

If you haven't had enough of hot air balloons, then here's another picture!

2003 Puyallup Fair Challenge theme was "Up, Up and Away."

The Fair received many quilt challenges this year, with this theme as title.

Here's my quilt, entitled "Kittys Fly Up, Up and Away:

Below is 'Forgiveness,' a quilt I created 2001 - 2003, after I learned that I lived with Multiple Sclerosis.

I showed this quilt also at the 2003 Puyallup Fair.

'Forgiveness' and 'Kitties Fly Up, Up and Away' quilts are now hanging in my living room!

This next 2005 quilt is called Grow to the Light.  It has taken me many years to complete.  Grow to the Light is what I do now,

as I have ended my literary ministry and all communications with others who have been with me for their own purposes it seems.

It's freeing to finally end the "friendships" with others who have never been my friend.  It's good for me to finally see this light!

Other people who have used and abused me do not grow to the light, for abuse doesn't grow anywhere, but only stays in one dreary place

that hides the light under a bushel.  I'm finished trying to get others to see the light that the Lord has given me to shine.  I pray that

one day they may Grow to the Light that the Lord shines.
